Post by Brian Albin »

Has anyone heard when we get the first pictures from Wide Field & Planetary Camera #3?

The recent one of Jupiter's dark spot was taken with the WFC3:

Though it says that was just a quick interruption from the callibration they were doing as it was such a rare event.

Not sure when the fully callibrated images will start coming through though.

Follow the HST calibration and commissioning here...

It is scheduled to be up and running by Oct' to image the Lcross/Centaur lunar impacts.

Thank you Gyro!
I did not know where to look for that information.

It is good to know we shall start getting pictures in October. I remember when the camera #2 replaced the first one in the 1990s and how much better the images were. I have been eager to see pictures from this newest camera.

Hi Brian,
I was looking at a site a few days ago and it showed an image of a distant galaxy taken by WFC2 and it then simulated a comparrison of the same galaxy taken by WFC3. The difference was incredible.
I too am looking forward to seeing the new images.

There was a brief mention of the Butterfly Nebula as seen in the refurbished Hubble on Radio 3 news yesterday.
Amusingly, the newsreader gave a vivid picture of the colours in the nebula, unaware that Hubble pics are monochrome with artificial colours being added on at the receiving end.
