Lucy’s asteroid odessey

Post by brian livesey »

The launch of asteroid probe Lucy’s mission to the asteroid belt and beyond will be to gain information from primordial material from the early formation of the Solar System. Lucy will visit eight asteroids, one in the main belt and seven ancient Trojan asteroids.
The Trojans are associated with Jupiter and are thought to hold information about the formation of the outer planets. They orbit the Sun in two loose groups, one ahead of Jupiter and the other behind the gas giant, i.e at Jupiter’s Lagrange points. Lucy’s odessey will last for 12-years. The probe is named “Lucy” after the famous ancient hominin fossil.
