Aussie moon rover

Post by brian livesey »

Australia has agreed a deal to built a 20kg (44lb) oxygen-seeking lunar rover as part of Nasa’s Artemis programme. Australia is a major player in robotics and semi-autonomous systems. NASA was impressed by Australia’s huge semi-autonomous ore carrying vehicles that are controlled from a distance of 1,600km (1000 miles).
The aim of the lunar rover will be to attempt to discover and extract oxygen and other oxides from the lunar regolith. If successful, it could mean that a future lunar base might be self-sufficient in oxygen.
The agreement to build the rover will depend on the rover meeting a number of stringent conditions during its development. Nasa’s administrator, Bill Nelson, said that the project would reinforce a relationship with Australia in space exploration that harks back to more than 50 years.
