CPC 800 XLT or the Meade LX90 ACF?

Post by Umar Ahmad »

Dear users,

I was wondering if any one on this forum has had any experience with the Celestron CPC 800 XLT, the Meade LX90 ACF or something similar? I understand they are both fork mounted SCTs with practically identical specifications and both systems feature largely automated GOTO GPS alignment systems. Does anyone have a preference, and if so why?

I am looking for a good all rounder 8" scope for visual astronomy, and an introduction to astro-imaging with room to grow.

Thanks,

Hi Umar. CELESTRON SCT optics are generally regarded as being better than MEADE. You could try stargazerslounge.com for more detailed advice.

Dear Brian,

Thank you for your reply.

I took your advice and asked for more information on Stargazer's lounge. The general consensus was that whilst both scopes are very good, the Celestron has the edge due to it's better thought out design and GOTO.

Thanks again,

Umar

Make sure you compare like with like. The Meade AFC optics and the Celestron Edge HD optics are a cut above the classic SCT optics. Both AFC and EDge optics are very good. The standard Celestron CPC will I believe use classic SCT optics, as did pre-AFC Meades.

The CPC has a more robust mechanical system than the (built down to a price) LX90. The comparable mounting to the CPC is probably the Meade LX200, much more expensve than the LX90 offering.

Have to say that the Celestron focusing CPC mechanism beats the LX90 standard one though,
