First thing i would do is get a free copy of Adaware.

Next thing is to switch off System Restore (assuming you're using XP or ME)

Then start the PC up in Safe Mode. Then run your AV prog and Adaware and see how you get on with that.

Also worth checking if there anything unusual in your start up folder. Or also do a start>Run> "msconfig" to see whats in there.

If something unusual is there then do a google search to get exact removal instructions for that particular spyware.

I run Grisoft AVG, Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm. Touch wood I haven't had any virus problems for a long time.
I also clone my hard drive once a week, using Nortons Ghost.

As with any AV software, if you dont have it on auto update, you must check for updates at least once a day.

wow that was a nasty b****r! SpyAxe. it keeps telling you that your compy is infected with viruses/malware/taken over/un-true e-mails. ect... you log on and buy its cleaning recomendation (if it works). Spybot AVG and Microsoft Antisoftware wont touch it as it regenerates to fast to compleat the clean and reboot. SmitRem is all i found to clean all files of it. down load save to desktop and run (in safe mode) can take up to 3 hours. thanks orion

I had a similar bug that produced pop-ups asking for money for it to either scan and remove malware or get uninstalled. Very annoying. Searches of virus definitions revealed nothing except the underlying worm's name and that it hides as an antivirus program. Various things like adaware and spybot were launched against it, but nothing so much as detected the thing. Turned out not to have deeply embedded itself, so just a quick delete and all was fine. It was on my parent's PC for months before I came home and removed it, so although it turned out to be an old and pretty harmless bug, it frightened them for a while.

Nasty.

Must remember to keep away from this internet thing...
