This is one of the major events in the UK during the International Year of Astronomy. It celebrates the 400th anniversary of the first-ever known use of the telescope for astronomy, by Thomas Harriot on 26 July 1609. It will be held at Syon House, Isleworth, West London, which is where Harriot made his historic first observation.

There will be a day of events for the whole family, including solar observation, an exhibition, planetarium shows (extra charge), talks, and even rocket launching! The admission charge of includes access to historic Syon House, which is well worth seeing in its own right and has been the setting for many costume dramas.

Highlight of the day will be the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate Harriot, at 4.30 pm.

In the evening there will be a special lecture by Dr Allan Chapman, followed by a reception. This will be of interest to anyone interested in the history of astronomy. Allan is famed for his appealing and entertaining lectures. The charge for this event, which will include a buffet reception, will be 20 pounds. For tickets, go to the Telescope 400 website:
