Alien Signals from Space

Post by RMSteele »

Don't get exited, we haven't found any. And that's become a bit of a niggle, hasn't it? We are discovering the signs of exoplanets galore, which seems to imply that the universe is teeming with planets of all types (and many unfamiliar ones at that). So why isn't it teeming with alien life and signals from advanced alien life?. Well, maybe it is and we haven't stumbled on them yet. That seems to be the logic of a newly proposed search reported in the Astronomy magazine news website article: "the truth is out there: using VERITAS to search for E.T."

Basically, we've found nowt at radio frequencies, so let's also look for faint optical signals that might or might not accompany powerful gamma ray pulses, a long range space communication system (its actually faint flashes of visible light they are looking for, but the four telescopes concerned were built to detect Cerenkov light radiation). If I understand it correctly, that's what the article is describing.

However, I think that we shall still find nowt. Communication over cosmic distances by electromagnetic radiation isn't communication, it's a message in a bottle. Interstellar communication will not be such until it harnesses physics we know nothing about yet..... So we aren't going to find anything, are we?...….Discuss?

Kind thoughts, Bob

Well, according to History Channel the aliens are already here and are running things according to their own agendas. I guess we just don't know where/how to look for their communication channels, any more than the Duke of Wellington had the knowledge to pick up radio broadcasts (had they existed).

Anyway Brian, there's a slightly more interesting story than looking for a dubious bunch of cosmic flashers. It seems that the stuff in red wine that does your heart good(!) also seems to slow down muscle wasting in low gravity, would you believe? This has obvious implications for Mars missions. They could either have pills with the stuff in, or take say, 10,000 bottles of the red stuff with them for a crew of 10 on a round trip. It would also have a great spin-off (literally) for sky watchers on Earth, coz if they dumped all the empties from here to Mars and back, we might have a great new meteor shower a couple of times a year.

in the quest for ET signals the search has been restricted to the wavelength of hydrogen. Now multiple wavebands are being explored, so a Barbarella signal ( possibly from a transmitter given to her tribe by a passing starship in exchange for bananas ) might be picked up at any time.
Alas, by the time Barbie receives our reply, she could well be, grey, wrinkled and toothless: sic transit gloria mundi :x  .

Brian, you really should do "the Barbarella Talk" at Portslade, as discussed in the General thread - with flint tipped spear, rat skin shorts and big stone boots. Sorry! I'm on the Mars Diet - too much red wine.

Seriously Bob, these days, there are said to be untold numbers of exoplanets, so it's reasonable to assume that life may exist at many levels of complexity. It would be sheer anthropocentrism to jump to the conclusion that Earth is the only planet in the entire universe to harbor sentient life.
A problem with picking up radio signals from stellar distances and not often mentioned, is the Doppler effect that smears out the signals due to galactic rotation. There could be many messenger signals coming our way that we misinterpret as radio noise.

Brian, I’m sure you’re right about effect of relative motion on signal frequencies; my point is that even if we are surrounded by such signals, it’s not communication. If we could pick up electromagnetic “broadcasts”, it would be merely the equivalent of sighting one passing ship from another on the ocean. Granted, it tells you that someone was there, has built something, and you might deduce a surprising amount about the builders. But it’s still an out of date message (or a ship) in a bottle. The fad for SETI in the electromagnetic spectrum will fizzle out. Frankly I doubt if we’ll find anything no matter how good our kit gets. But we might, and even if we do pick up episodes from cosmic “Neighbours”, we won’t learn anything that we don’t already know, technologically speaking. Such civilisations will be at the same stage as ours: mechanical, chemical, electronic, selfish, divided….. We, and other such worlds will give up listening at the cosmic wall for the domestic mumblings next door, after the military learns nothing of value, and funding dries up, and the public gets bored, like it did with Apollo. When physical science comes out of the dark ages and we can stop beating on space time with an electromagnetic pipe wrench, we will have real time communication with those at a similar stage of development. That’s my view.

I surely believe that in our huge universe there are other civilizations - thinking that we are alone in the universe is as stupid as to believe that the Earth is located on a turtle.

Some years ago, there was a TV documentary about ETs. An elderly, flat-earthist lady in America genuinely believed our flat earth rests on the back of a turtle. The interviewer asked the lady what the turtle stands on. She replied "It's turtles all the way down."

The flat earth lady’s reply reminds me of a lawyer’s question in a court case. It concerned a set of stairs that were said in evidence to go all the way down to the crime scene basement; the lawyer asked “...and these stairs, do they go up also?” Or is that turtology? Anyway, all this kit, all this computer power, all this ingenuity, and it’s still looking like we’re in the basement and can’t find the light switch. Hey, how about these stairs? Maybe they go up too. Now that’s what we need to do to find the aliens: think out of the basement! Bob

The case is maybe the technologies of other civilization is far different from ours and that is why we cannot recognize them. Maybe they don't even send any signs or they live not in our or near universe.
