Nasa is considering using lunar lava tubes as caves for astronauts to occupy. They would offer protection from solar radiation and could require less materials to make them habitable than surface structures.
Lunar scientist, Dr. Moriarty 111, said on a social networking site: "I think it makes sense to work within some of the structures and resources that are already there [ on the Moon ]. It could be interesting to set up shop within a pre-existing lava tube, which could provide shielding from temperature variations and incoming solar radiation."
Nasa's successor to Apollo, the Artemis mission to the Moon, is planned for launching in 2024. Surprisingly for some, Donald Trump has increased the lunar exploration budget by an extra $1.6bn - "So that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!" he tweeted. Trump might be motivated by the American military's aim for "full-spectrum dominance": on land, at sea and in the air and space.
