Asteroid Bennu's plumes

Post by brian livesey »

An unusual asteroidal phenomenon has been observed by Nasa's asteroid probe, Osiris-Rex. The spinning top-shaped asteroid Bennu is ejecting large particles into space. "The discovery of plumes is one of the biggest surprises of my career," said Dante Laurette, who leads the Osiris-Rex team at the Arizona University, to CNN.
Researchers don't know why Bennu is releasing particles, some of them tens of centimetres in diameter and others much smaller.
The Osiris-Rex probe touched down on Bennu, 70 million miles from Earth, last December.
