After being in space for 15 years the ISS is pretty rife with bacteria. Nasa scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory have examined dust from ISS vacumn bags and found a range of pathogens, mostly associated with human skin.
The study is published in the journal Microbiome and one type of bacteria is associated with diptheria. Microbiologist Dr. Venkataswaran said "By using both traditional and state-of-the-art molecular analysis techniques we can build a clear picture of the International Space Station's microbial community, helping to spot bacterial agents that may damage equipment or threaten astronaut health, and identify areas in need of more stringent cleaning."
