On June 27, Nasa successfully launched its small IRIS ( Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph ) space observatory into orbit, on an airborne Pegasus rocket.
IRIS will study the solar region between the photosphere and corona, partly to try to understand why the corona is at a much higher temperature ( 1 million degrees kelvin )than the photosphere and chromosphere ( 6000K ). IRIS has a resolution down to 150 miles.
The Sun generates sonic energy that is likened to thousands of jet engines going off all at the same time. It's only an idea, but could it be that the Sun's sonic energy, converting to heat, is a contributing factor to the high temperature of the corona? :?

The air-launch occurred on June 28 at 02.27 U.T.C.

I'm afraid that the Americans (and NASA in particular) use U.S.
or local time in their announcements.

A couple of examples - The first U.S. satellite was launched on 1958 February 1,
but the histories have it as January 31 since that was local time.

The first step on the Moon was on 1969 July 21, but often given as July 20
since that was the U.S. date/time.

The orbit of IRIS is aligned more or less along the Earth's day/night terminator
in order to give it prolonged views of the Sun.
