Earlier this year, Nasa found the Moon rover Lunokhod 1, launched from Russia in 1971 and described in the western press as a samovar on wheels, and bounced a laser off the rover's reflector.
Lunokhod 1 spent 11 months exploring the Imbrium Basin and was one of the most successful of the soviet-era rovers.
The rover has been "reborn" as a measuring station. Laser beams bounced off Lunokhod's reflector and other reflectors left on the lunar surface can provide valuable data about the moon's distance, orbital characteristics and even surface composition.
