China launched a medium-lift Long March 7A on Monday from the Wenchang Space Launch Centre in Hainan, but a malfunction occurred during the flight. The rocket was in the LM-7 class, that are regarded as central to the construction of a space station due for completion in 2022.
The China Aerospace and Technology Corporation said that it aimed to launch more than 40 rockets for the space station and space infrastructure missions this year. The Chinese government says that its space programme is for purely peaceful purposes.
In 2003, China became the third country to put an astronaut into space, after the former Soviet Union and America. India is also preparing for its first manned launch.
