First black hole image

Post by brian livesey »

This is an historic week for astrophysics, as the first image of a black hole has been released. The super-massive black hole in question resides at the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy, M87, in Virgo.
The image was contained in 6 square metres of hard drives, involving 200 scientists from 40 countries, and two years of processing. A bevy of huge global radio telescopes, known collectively as the Event Horizon Telescope, used interferometry to yield the final image. The observation is a further confirmation of Enstein's theory of gravitation.
The next test is to image the much smaller, but nearer, black hole, Sagittarius A*, at the centre of the Milky Way: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47891902 .
