Solar Super-Storms

Post by brian livesey »

An examination of ancient 100,000 year-old ice cores in Greenland, has revealed the occurrence of three "super-storms" from coronal mass ejections over the past 3000 years.
The Quebec solar storm blackouts in 1989 and in Malmo, Sweden, in 2000, were puny in comparison to a solar storm of 660 BC. A similar event today would cause havoc with power grids, communications and GPS systems.
Professor Raimund Muscheler, of Lund Observatory, Sweden, said: "If that solar storm had occurred today, it could have severe effects on our hi-tech society." Exceptional solar storms are rare said the researchers.
Earth is constantly bathed in high-energy particles from the Sun, and there's always the possibility of a particularly strong event to cause electronic mayhem..
