Current theories about Earth's ice ages are that they are caused by variations in the obliquity of Earth's axis and eccentricity changes in our planet's orbit around the Sun ( known as Milankovitch cycles ).
Now there's a new kid on the block. Researchers at MIT are saying that huge seismic events in equatorial regions have caused global temperatures to plummet. Colliding tectonic plates have left large areas of oceanic rock exposed that can cool the planet.
The researchers claim that, due to higher temperatures in the tropics, a chemical reaction was triggered that caused the oceanic rocks to absorb massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which in turn brought a drastic reduction in temperatures and an ice age. The gas absorbing rocks are exposed as "sutures" in the mountain ranges that are formed by colliding tectonic plates.
Geologist Dr. Oliver Jagoutz at MIT, who led the research team, said: "We found that every time there was a peak in the suture zone in the tropics, there was a glaciation event. So every time you get, say, 10,000km of sutures in the tropics, you get an ice age."

Okay Brian, just type in: "MIT and ice ages".
