Where did life come from?

There are a number of hypotheses and theories that attempt to explain why our planet is alive. One idea is that comets and asteroids prepared the way for terrestrial life by seeding the planet with organic compounds and possibly water.
Another idea is that lightning strikes might have produced amino acids and sugars - the building blocks of life - on the early Earth.
Yet another idea is that life may have its origins in deep, hydrothermal vents, releasing hydrogen-rich molecules into the sea.
A more recent suggestion is that life on Earth may have its origins in dust being wafted at high velocities ( up to 44 miles per second ) through space. British scientists have been studying these powerful flows of interplanetary dust.
Professor Arjun Barera, from the University of Edinburgh's school of physics and astronomy, said: "The proposition that space dust collisions could propel organisms over enormous distances between planets raises some exciting prospects of how life and the atmospheres of planets originated.
"The streaming of fast space dust is found throughout planetary systems and could be a common factor in proliferating life." The research was published in the journal Astrobiology.
