This month's bulletin No.443 includes an article "CLUES ABOUT MISSING GALAXIES". A peculiar discussion of the effects that UV light has on the production of galaxies.

There is a revealing line
The UV radiation excites the gas in the
Universe, causing it to emit red (H-alpha) light in a somewhat similar
way to that in which the gas in a fluorescent tube is excited.
How does a flourescent tube work? Not by gravity, in my house. It requires a an electric potential to cause ionisation, plasma discharge and then electromagnetic radiation results when a sustained electric current persists. What part of this does the massive star or black hole resemble? I thought these were entirely gravity operated systems?
