Hi Guys
I have a Philips SP900NC webcam that I have used in the past for planetary imaging through my 10” Newt.
I no longer have my old laptop which was running Windows XP.My new laptop runs Windows 10 and unfortunately the software driver for the Philips SP900NC will not run on any operating system newer than XP.
It would appear that I need a new webcam for planetary imaging and was wondering whether any of you guys can suggest a replacement.
Thanks in advance
Graham

Hi Graham.

In my experience the age of the "astro-webcam" has passed. The MS LifeCam still gets the odd mention but modifying it is fiddly and it proves difficult to get absolute control over the settings available. The Toucams seem to have finally fallen at the fences of Windows 10. Of course it is possible to maintain a laptop running Win XP or Win 7 for the sole purpose of operating legacy equipment and software, that is what I am doing. As an aside I noticed that my local GP surgery is still running with Win XP, I expect many businesses will do the same and I read that MS are supporting XP for a number of years yet.

My advice would be to look at some of the current crop of dedicated planetary cameras. Starting prices are not much more than you might pay for a webcam, and you get support and dedicated software and higher frame-rates as well. For instance "365 astronomy" have cameras with a good range of price and capability, and the GPCAM from "Altair Astro" looks interesting.

Best regards,
