Last month, the plans for a Scottish space port were announced, with some of the funding coming from Highlands and Islands Enterprise ( HIE ), who will invest £9.8m in the £17.2m facility. Another £35.1m of funding for the project will come from the UK Space Agency.
The whole project is very much business-orientated.
The aim is to fill a gap in small commercial satellites. The sector is estimated to be worth £3.8bn or so to the UK economy over the next decade. Once completed, the spaceport could launch up to 2000 satellites by 2030.
The official announcement for the spaceport was made by Business Secretary Greg Clark, during a visit to the proposed site yesterday. Some critics of the project say that the weather is too fickle in Sutherland to guarantee regular launches.
