The large Japanese secret satellite IGS 1B will re-enter the atmosphere in the next day or two.
Positional observations are badly needed to help refine the final stages of the lifetime of over 9 years.

Hi Stella,

It looks like this brief clear spell's not going to last much longer so we might miss out (not like the weather to spoil things). Should be clear for tonights pass but that might be it (for me).
Have you got any rough ideas of a date/location for re-entry or is it too early for any reasonable predictions yet. Checking on HA there are some (one a night) passes over the coming days that cover almost the full length of the UK. (Wonder if we'll see anything of re-entry?).
Will be looking out for tonights pass and post any results.

Alison Rounce reported:
"Last night about 10:00pm was looking skyward (as you do)and saw a light going quite fast from south to north? "

This was IGS 1B, just 12 hours before it met its fiery end.

What's a "secret satellite" Stella? Would that be a military satellite or is it a secret?

A secret satellite is one that is not acknowledged by the country that launched it as being in orbit.
The orbital elements for the satellite are not published by Space-track, and are therefore regarded
as 'classified' or restricted.
A number of countries have satellites in this category including U.S.A., France, Japan, Germany and
Israel.
A worldwide network of amateur 'hobbyists' have undertaken the task of tracking these, and
calculating and publishing their orbits.

Hi,

I got the timings of the visible passes for Tue 24th July from HA (don't know how accurate they were due to decay but they were posted on there).
