The United Arab Emirates has launched its first satellite, on board a Japanese H-2A rocket from the Tanegashima Space Centre. The rocket also carried Ibuku-2, a greenhouse gas observation satellite for Japan.
The UAE satellite is part of the Gulf nation's emerging space programme, that intends to send two astronauts to the International Space Station in 2019. The UAE also plans to launch a Mars probe in 2020 and build a "science city" there by 2117.
Japan intends to expand commercial satellite launch services by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It seems that everybody wants to get in on the game, and we can only wonder how much the volume of "space junk" is going to increase by in the coming years.
