An exploding fireball at 5.45 am yesterday prompted an air and land search in Devon, after numerous members of the public alerted the police to what they thought was a disintegrating aircraft.
Police and coastguard helicopters searched the area, but it was concluded that a meteor (meteorite ) had been the cause of the alarm. There might possibly be meteoritic ground fragments to be found.

The BBC illustrated this story with a photo taken by FIONA HAYES, and
captioned "The trail, seen here over Torquay, was thought initially to have been caused by an aircraft". The irony is that the photo is NOT of the meteor but is a condensation trail,
and WAS caused by an aircraft.
