This new comet discovery has reached mag. 8 and is passing through Virgo. The comet will be closest to Earth on November 27. Go get it Mike!

Hope to Brian! This morning the sky was "not good enough" although had lovely view of Venus and glimpse of Spica though holes in cloudlets painted red by the approaching dawn.
On a different subject, yesterday while leaving the Foredown Tower in the afternoon, a couple of us skywatchers were bemoaning the fact, that despite lots of clouds and some rain over the last months, we had not seen a single rainbow (which I always try to photograph) for ages! As he walked down his car and I set off up the lane, almost immediately, there in the north over the Downs there appeared a rainbow! ..and as luck would have it, I had my camera with me! Regards maf.

Sunday, 18/11/18, from around 0500 to 0600. Probably my only chance! A clear morning, but with cold wind. Located the field stars around the given location of Comet Machholz-Fujikawa-Iwamoto, at first from the window and later from the garden, using Acuter 65mm spotting scope. Area low in the southeast. Found zeta Virginis and the various stars around it, including the two 7th magnitude stars, one above and the the other below zeta, and a 8.5 magnitude star to the left. I also managed to glimpse the even fainter star nex t to the lower 7th magnitude star but was unable to pick out this 'bright' comet! Regards maf.

No, I'm not seeing comets of late, either! I've been doing quite a bit of astronomy, but can I see Comet 64P Swift-Gehrels? :? Even when conveniently located just off Mirach and mag. 8.5, allegedly!

Strange. The seeing has been good, with skies around mag. 6 to my eyes. Perhaps these are very small comets.

Never mind, at least there is plenty more to see. I explored the Coma Cluster about a week ago, in the early hours. It never fails to fill me with awe.

Happy viewing,

Nigel

We are now reaching the time when Comet Wirtanen will pop above the southern horizon and hopefully should be easily seen but...the damned weather has even washed out observing here from the land of the South Saxons at the moment! Fog...grey skies...drizzle...rain. regards (a very grumpy) maf
