Bright streaks across wednesday night

Hi everyone,
I was out last night doing general observations in the clear sky, which caused my first interesting challenge as there were hundreds of more stars visable. For example near Cassiopa there were lots more stars around the usual w or m patttern.
After watching Jupiter for a while, i looked around to pick my next point of interest when i unexpectedly saw a streak of light from east to west high up in the sky( did not get any precise readings as i was not expecting it) at 23:26 the white streak only lasted 4 seconds max then dissapeared. Then another streak of light at about 23:38 which was brighter and longer and lasted upto 5 seconds.
I have seen the I.S.S in the night sky which was a bright streak that came and went, the differance between the I.S.S and these streaks seemed to be faster and i was wondering if anyone else saw any streaks of light on the 19th October between 22:00 to 23:59 or have any idea what they were?

Hi Kevin,
The Orionid meteor's maximum was I think October 20 to 22nd.
It is likely you saw Orionid meteors.

Thats amazing to know i witnesses the Orionid meteor shower.

This stargazing is fantastic and the more i see the more amazed iam.

I can't understand your comparison between Meteors and the ISS,
The ISS would appear to be a bright Star moving slowly across the sky,
Or am I reading it wrong ?

If it was the Orionid Meteors,then you had better luck that I had

Hi,
no comparision was meant between iss and meteors.

It was just the fact i did not know what the streaks were on wednesday.

I have seen the ISS in the sky and it was amazing, these streaks now i believe were part of the Orionid meteors were alot faster.

I only saw 2 in an hour, one was faint and the second one was brighter and stood out more.

Several years ago I saw about 27 Perseids in a couple of hours,it was by far my best obs of Meteors,
I managed a few Orionids up at a friends once during a party,I was taking a brake out back and got about 7 in 5 mins,

Sadly Ive never captured anything good on camera as yet

Once I was lucky taking a photo of a comet from the back garden with a Minolta film camera and 58mm f/1.2 lens. After I counted off about 12 seconds a very bright meteor maybe a fireball went past the comet and I got a good photo of both. I closed the shutter at 14 seconds and worried I had closed it too early but both comet and meteor were well photographed.

I have photographed a few other meteors but that was the best photo.
