A big thank you to any of you who came to support STARFEST yesterday. We think the event was a big success, with excellent speakers, trade stands and exhibits. :) It was an enjoyable day for astronomers and has been great publicity for the society. Any feedback from anyone who attended is greatly ap...

Sounds like you might need to reduce the exposure a bit. I normally capture with an exposure of about 1/15s to 1/30s but it depends on your setup. You want to adjust the settings so you can see a reasonably bright image but with some level of detail - the main cloud belts should show up. Then it's a...

Just under a week to go until STARFEST on 19 November. There are still tickets available and we can now confirm that it will also be possible to purchase tickets on the door on the day (subject to availability). This is the first of what we hope may become an annual event so please come along and su...

The photo seems reversed compared to Rachel's? I normally image with no diagonal, but I had the diagonal in place when I took mine. I'm never sure what the 'right' orientation is (unless I am imaging the Moon) so I tend not to change what comes out. :D Good that you caught the moons in the picture ...

Thanks, David. And thanks, Brian, for the tips. I will give that a go. I still don't know what half the functions in Registax do. If I have any success I will re-post it. :D

Jupiter 1 November 2011

Well, here is my first attempt at Jupiter this year. I was quite pleased with it. It looks like it has eyes! The GRS was just disappearing as I captured it. Annoyingly it had been right round the front when I began observing but by the time I decided to get the camera out it was rapidly vanishing. T...

I don't use SharpCap so don't know anything about that particular software, but just some basic questions: What are you trying to image? What scope are you using and does it have motorised tracking? The object needs to be dead centre so use a high power eyepiece to get it central before changing to ...

Lovely picture. I love the Mare Crisium along the terminator there. It looks like someone took a bite out.

Excellent. 8)

I would be more than happy with that shot. It has almost a 3D appearance. Beautiful colours and crisp stars. It's great. 8)

Hello and welcome! I'll second all the advice given so far. If you can find a club local to you it will help you expand your level of knowledge and get you up and running with your scope. 'Turn Left' is indeed THE book to have as a beginner and will help you find lots of stuff, but start with the Mo...
