Despite their close appearance in the sky, NGC 5857 and NGC 5859 are actually a pair of apparently non-interacting galaxies. It is indeed an amazing alignment that allows us to see the nebula as a ring.
I must admit that I have never been able to understand how planetary nebula can have such a variety of shapes but it makes for some amazing images.

Here is the famous 'Ring' Nebula in Lyra. Although it was early in the season and the 'Ring' was quite low, the night was cold and clear and the data quite good.
